read between the lines

Part of the learning process is studying styles, techniques, previous eras, fashions etc. It's all handy to know as I learned from reading The Amy Face (check out THIS blog post)

There's a lot you can learn from the Internet i.e YouTube & blogs but I have come to learn that books & magazines are full of everything you need to know, and they are obviously more hands on. I've purchased a couple of books to get my brain pumping.

Makeup Your Mind by François Nars
Helpful instruction, tips & tricks with great before and after shots, includes a clear template cover over each after photo, showing what & where each product has been applied. The book is a little clumsy as it has a hard cover then the pages have been ring bound inside, but the pictures are very clear and there is A LOT of written information. Around $60, well worth it.

Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin
Kevin's tips are fantastic and this book was a joy to read. He has covered many styles from basic looks, to past eras, to drag queens. The pictures are gorgeous and include Demi Moore, Courtney Love, Drew Barrymore + more! Priced at around $30 it's a little gem to have.
UPDATE:
I probably should mention that I got my books from Fishpond they have every book imaginable at fantastic prices :)

pretty on the outside

2 weeks of photographic makeup class have flown by. We're learning that everything we've learned previously doesn't apply to photographic and we get to play with colour, texture, textile, any medium you want to use to basically apply to a face. So we had a task, we were given fashion pics of a model, without a head. Then we had to design our face, according to what we imagined would go with the outfit. My picture was a very pale model in a pretty, vintage, lacy outfit.
My partner wasn't the friendliest of people (as you can prob tell) but she had one of the easiest faces I've worked on, great eyes, full lips and good cheek bones. She had some mild acne which covered up well with a very small amount of liquid mineral foundation & concealer. Then Mac studio fix powder sponged over the face.

When I got to see the head of my picture at the end, my job was basically the same, except the model had darker pink lips than mine.

Pin Up

My lovely friend Janine, kindly let me use her to practice on :) A few drinkies and some patience (on her behalf!) and I got to practice something I hadn't done before, a Pin Up style, was lots of fun!

Rocksteady

What perfect timing to pay tribute to this wonderful woman, it was her 40th birthday yesterday! Girlfriend knows how to look after herself!

When I was in high school, this whirlwind came through my life in the form of a SoCal Ska band with a platinum blonde singer, who's tomboy attitude mixed with fantastic hair & makeup took over me...
the amazing hair stylesthe porcelain skin, thick eyeliner & bright lips. Her look inspired by Marilyn Monroe & Jean Harlow, who she ultimately played in The Aviator movieher wicked style
... Gwen Stefanifor a recap on some classic Gwen here are my favourite film clips:

Early Winter (the hair makeup & fashion in the clip gets me all choked up! the green D&G gown takes my breath away)

p.s Gwen Stefani as a woman, I love... but Tony, Adrian & Tom make up 3/4's of No Doubt, what a great group of people & musicians. Seeing them live is still one of my best music experiences ever.

Learning to fly

Last night we had our final assessment in Design & Apply Makeup. I completed the work in the designated time frame and yep, I'm competent. I mean, it's not like anyone failed anyway, just one girl has to go back and redo one of her looks.

The 12 weeks has gone so quickly!! Thankfully I'm going back next week for Photography Makeup, a smaller class that goes for 6 weeks. Looking forward to that, all the rules go out the window, will be heaps more exciting :)

I saw my teachers comments, one stood out to me 'Koren has applied herself 100% every week, keep practicing and you'll make a great artist'
YAY!
